Guardian Rumour Mill

Barry Glendenning

Having long ago eclipsed the League and FA Cups as England’s second biggest domestic football competition, the transfer window finally draws to a close tonight with many of the big-spending usual suspects still in contention early on Deadline Day. English league clubs have already spent £78,450,000 in this window, a figure that is likely to resemble chump change once the army of breathless and excitable Sky Sports News reporters deployed to stand in the perishing cold at stadia and training grounds around the country have packed up and gone home to thaw out.

If various morning papers are to be believed, Manchester United are white-hot favourites to add this January’s transfer window to the one they won last summer, with Wesley Sneijder rumoured to be just one of several decidedly expensive players rumoured to be en route to Old Trafford today. The Dutch midfielder had been rumoured to be leaving Galatasaray for Serie A leaders Juventus, but with the Old Lady of Italy having cooled her interest in the 30-year-old and decided she prefers Borussia Dortmund’s Armenian No10 Henrikh Mkhitaryan instead, Louis van Gaal hopes to secure the services of Sneijder, who has made little secret of his desire to leave Turkey. Although Galatasaray want him to stay, United will get their man if they trigger the €20m release clause in his contract that prompted Juve to take their business elsewhere.

The stand-out player in Wolfsburg’s thrilling Bundesliga win over Bayern Munich on Friday night, whey-faced forward Kevin De Bruyne is also being linked with a move to United in the coming hours, while that low drone you can hear is incessant babble concerning the imminent departure of Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund for Old Trafford. A whopping £67m is the fee being mentioned in conjunction with what can only be described as a classic “double swoop”.

With so many players en route to Manchester United, club officials will need to free up some parking spots at their training ground and Anderson is already thought to be in Brazil, where he’ll ink a deal worth £25,000 per week (net) plus a hefty annual bonus to play for Internacional in Porto Alegre. And having failed to impress his new manager in the same way he impressed Sir Alex Ferguson, Adnan Januzaj may find himself farmed out on loan to Everton for the rest of the season. Of course, should the Toffees accept the £5m and Aaron Lennon-shaped winger reported to be on offer from Tottenham Hotspur for Kevin Mirallis, young master Januzaj will almost certainly find himself kicking his heels on the United bench for another four months at least.

West Ham central defender Winston Reid is another player being linked with a move to Spurs, but the £6.5m-rated Kiwi may not leave Upton Park until his contract expires in the summer. The Mirror reports that Reid has already agreed a £60,000-per-week end-of-season move to Tottenham, but Liverpool are also rumoured to be interested in the 26-year-old, who could be replaced by Lokomotiv Moscow’s Croatian defender Vedran Corluka at West Ham if he does head elsewhere today. A move to Hull City has been mooted for Corluka, who is also the subject of speculation linking him with Leicester City. With Hull in all sorts of relegation bother following their home capitulation to Newcastle on Saturday, Steve Bruce is expected to embark on quite the recruitment drive today, with Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert believed to be among his targets.

West Brom are ready to cut their losses on record £10m summer signing Brown Ideye by selling him to Qatari club Al-Gharafa for £5m, in order to fund the purchase of a replacement striker who might actually go so far as score more than one goal for them. West Ham’s Carlton Cole and the aforementioned Lambert are believed to feature prominently on the shopping list of Tony Pulis. According to the Shields Gazette, West Brom are also keen on signing Newcastle left-back Davide Santon, but will face competition for the Italian’s services from both Inter and West Ham.

Ronald Koeman has an undeniably keen eye for young Eredivisie player who’ll be able to hack it in the Premier League and Tonny Vilhena may be the latest of his former Feyenoord changes to pitch up at Southampton. The departure of Jack Cork to Swansea City has freed up £3m for potential transfers, but the Rotterdam club want £5m for a player once likened to Edgar Davids by Dutch football coach Aad de Mos. Southampton are also reported to be hopeful of bringing Benfica midfielder Filip Djuricic to St Mary’s on loan from Benfica.

Chelsea hope to announce the £26.8m signing of Juan Cuadrado this morning, in a deal that will not be rubber-stamped unless André Schürrle moves to Wolfsburg. Despite rumours that the clubs had agreed a £22.5m fee, Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs told reporters that this was not the case. “There is no agreement at the moment,” he said. “The clock is running out. Our options are getting less hour by hour. It depends on money. We still would like to sign him.”

The Tottenham purgatory of Emmanuel Adebayor could come to an end today, with Stoke City manager Mark Hughes believed to be interested in offering the 30-year-old a career lifeline. Of course, no deadline day Rumour Mill would be complete without a mention of Harry Redknapp, so it’s unsurprising to learn the Queen’s Park Rangers manager is interested in bringing the Togolese striker to Loftus Road. In the event of his mooted move to Everton falling through, Adebayor’s team-mate Aaron Lennon might find himself signing for Harry, while Bakary Sako has also been lined up in the QPR gaffer’s cross-hairs. TA popular fellow arouind the Midlands, the Wolverhampton Wanderers winger is wanted by Aston Villa and West Brom. Gentlemen, start your fax machines ...

Bristol City to seek £250,000 compensation if West Ham are punished for playing Diafra Sakho in FA Cup tie after striker pulled out of Senegal squad for Africa Cup of Nations

Diafra Sakho pulled out of the Senegal squad for the Africa Cup of Nations
Striker said he had a back injury but then played for West Ham in FA Cup
Sakho scored the winner as the Hammers beat Bristol City to advance
League One club want compensation if West Ham are punished
Sakho was left out of Sam Allardyce's squad for the defeat to Liverpool

By Sam Cunningham

Bristol City will demand compensation from West Ham if FIFA determine that Diafra Sakho should not have played in their FA Cup defeat.

Senegal were furious with West Ham for not releasing Sakho for the Africa Cup of Nations then playing him in their fourth-round tie with Bristol City where he scored the winner.

Senegal reported West Ham and Sakho to FIFA – who are investigating the situation – and the League One club will seek compensation should world football's governing body take action.

FIFA are investigating the situation but would not put a timeline on when a conclusion is expected.

A spokesman said: 'Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the player Diafra Sakho and the club West Ham United for a potential violation of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players. At this stage we can’t make any further comments.'

Bristol City will look for in the region of £250,000 if it is deemed that Sakho should not have played against them.

They would have won £90,000 in prize money for progressing to the fifth round and would have been set to receive far more from gate receipts. West Ham drew West Bromwich Albion in the next round.

West Ham maintain they have done nothing wrong and that Sakho did not team up with Senegal because a back problem meant he could not fly.

Co-chairman David Sullivan told Sportsmail last week: 'A top back surgeon said Sakho can’t fly and he still can’t fly, he went by car to Bristol.

'We are sure any FIFA hearing will vindicate us. The player missed four games as a result of injuries incurred whilst playing for Senegal. We have done nothing untoward.'

Manager Sam Allardyce added: 'I'm not worried that Sakho will face a ban whatsoever. We have stuck by every rule and regulation in the book.'

Players can be banned for representing their clubs if they are found to have dodged international duty.

Sakho was due to get a train to face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday but was not included in the squad after Allardyce was advised to leave him out until the situation is resolved.

The £250,000 compensation would be a considerable aid to Bristol City, currently top of League One.

West Ham enquire about Ondrej Mazuch should Winston Reid leave for Tottenham

Ondrej Mazuch is a target for West Ham United on Deadline Day
Sam Allardyce also has Genk's Kara Mbodj as an alternative
The Hammers are wary of interest in Winston Reid from Tottenham

By Simon Jones for MailOnline

West Ham, wary of late interest in Winston Reid from Tottenham, have made enquiries for Dnipro's Czech Republic defender Ondrej Mazuch.

But the Hammers are running out of time to get a deal done and also have Kara Mbodj at Genk as an alternative.

Sam Allardyce has made it clear that none of his players will be leaving Upton Park on Deadline Day.

West Ham have made enquiries about Dnipro's Czech Republic defender Ondrej Mazuch

‘Quite a few clubs have been trying to take some of our squad players away, the manager said.

‘That is not acceptable in terms of where we are at the minute and that has upset those players because they can probably get longer or bigger contracts elsewhere.’

That, however, hasn't stopped Allardyce from making provisions in case Winston Reid departs.

West Bromwich Albion want to sign Carlton Cole?

By Steven Toplis, Reporter

West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Cartlon Cole from West Ham United, according to reports.

The 31-year-old striker has featured in just 12 league games for the Hammers this season, scoring two goals.

He is said to be frustrated with his lack of first-team opportunities under manager Sam Allardyce.

Cole spent seven years at Upton Park until leaving in the summer of 2013, before he returned three months later.

According to Sky Sports News, West Brom have made the former Chelsea man a target before the transfer window closes.

Cole's last goal for West Ham came in the FA Cup tie against Everton last month.

Report: Sunderland and West Ham chase Cameroonian international defender Aurelien Chedjou

The former Lille man is a deadline day target for the Premier League sides.

West Ham and Sunderland are reportedly planning a move for Galatasaray defender Aurelien Chedjou (age 29). The report from Turkish source Net Gazete both Premier League clubs are keen on bringing in the Cameroonian from the Turkish giants before the Transfer Window shuts tomorrow evening.

The former Lille man however is a wanted commodity. It is reported by the same report that Gala are also fighting off the advances of Rennes, Dynamo Kiev and an official bid from French side AS Monaco.

Chedjou joined up with Gala in 2013 and has become a regular in the Turkish club's back line in the past year.

West Ham are sweating over the contract of Winston Reid, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham in the summer by The Mirror this weekend.

Meanwhile Sunderland are battling relegation. The club could do with defensive reinforcements, with veterans Wes Brown and John O'Shea currently their leading defensive options and Sebastian Coates in reserve, Sunderland could certainly do with top quality reinforcements.

Chedjou, who has recently returned from a disappointing campaign with the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations, has played 22 games this season, scoring two goals for the club.

Report: West Ham can sign defender Kara Mbodj on loan, West Brom to miss out?

West Ham could beat West Brom, Celtic and Newcastle to the signing of Kara Mbodj.

West Ham United are linked with a deadline day move for defender Kara Mbodj, by The Sun.

The paper write that the versatile Senegalese star is available on loan from Belgian side Genk, if the Hammers commit to a £2 million summer deal.

Mbodj can also play in midfield and was linked just last week by The Mail with a move to fellow Premier League side West Brom.

In December The Mail linked the 25-year-old to Celtic, and Newcastle United.

The report Mbodj could leave on loan is at odds with The Mail's previous claims that Genk boss Alex McLeish would demand £5 million for the in-demand star.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce told the club's website on Sunday night that the club would be looking to bring in a player or two on loan on transfer deadline day, specifically looking at the defence due to recent injuries.

Mbodj would be a potential long-term replacement for Winston Reid, yet his ability to play in central midfield makes him a good back-up for Alex Song and Cheik Kouyate.

Manager on Monday

Sam Allardyce is expecting a busy Monday as he focuses on transfers and injuries

As the January transfer window prepares to close tonight, Sam Allardyce admits that his thoughts will be split between potential new recruits and the injury concerns among his current squad.

Premier League clubs have until 11pm on Monday night to confirm any new additions to their squads and, as ever, Big Sam and the Board will be working hard to see if any suitable last-minute deals can be reached. While there is certainly no sense of panic, the need for reinforcements was increased following a casualty-heavy 2-0 loss at Liverpool on Saturday, where James Collins, Winston Reid and Andy Carroll all succumbed to injury.

"With the window coming to a close, I think we'll possibly be looking at bringing in someone on a short-term deal or a loan contract." Big Sam said. "We'll see what's there and if it's something worth doing then we'll take a look.

"With Andy Carroll's injury, we'll know more once we've had the scan but it's too early to guess how serious or non-serious it is. We'll know better in the next few days.

"Hopefully it's not too serious as we can ill-afford any more injuries at this stage of the season if we want to continue where we are in the league, stay in the top eight and continue in the FA Cup which is only ten days away.

"We were already without James Tomkins, Carl Jenkinson, Cheik Kouyate and Diafra Sakho and now these three new injuries have left us pretty thin.

"It seems Kouyate has a bit of an ankle injury and we didn't really know the extent of that until he arrived back in the country on Friday afternoon. We were expecting him to be available for the bench as cover in central defence at Liverpool as both Doneil Henry and Reece Burke were injured in our Under-21s game.

"If Andy is out we can probably cope up front if Sakho comes back with Carlton and Enner, but in defence we need at least two of the players back for Sunday's game against Manchester United. It's where we suffered last year and we've hit that problem again."

The Hammers had started brightly at Anfield and the game was evenly poised without a goal at the break, leading to hopes of a first victory at the red half of Merseyside since 1963. The visitors were soon undone, though, as Collins and Reid were forced off with hamstring injuries and Carroll made way with a knee complaint.

"Having put up a good showing in the first half and looking comfortable, it just became too much for us based on our team rather than the brilliant talents of Liverpool. It wasn't our day and we didn't have enough second half to cause them any more problems.

"The only record I could have broken was to bring on Reece Oxford as the youngest player ever in the Premier League, but with the injuries and the fact it was 1-0 meant I sadly wasn't able to."

West Ham set to make loan move for Marseille defender

West Ham are set to make a loan move for Marseille defender Doria after co-owner David Sullivan flew to France on transfer deadline day.

Doria, 20, has failed to make any impact at Marseille and the Brazilian defender could be allowed to join the east London club on loan until the end of the season.

Sam Allardyce is desperate to strengthen his back-line as he faces a defensive crisis heading into the Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday.

Allardyce said: "With the window coming to a close, I think we'll possibly be looking at bringing in someone on a short-term deal or a loan contract. We'll see what's there and if it's something worth doing then we'll take a look."

James Tomkins was forced to miss the 2-0 defeat against Liverpool with a hamstring problem while Winston Reid and James Collins both picked up injuries during the game at Anfield.

Jack Sullivan, son of co-owner David, confirmed on his Twitter site that his dad was in France on Monday and the club are hoping to ease their injury crisis with a new arrival before the deadline closes at 11pm.

West Ham hoping to convince Palermo defender

In-demand centre back, Ezequiel Munoz, is currently being courted by both Sampdoria and English Premier League side West Ham.

The Palermo defender had been expected to sign for AC Milan but that move looks increasingly unlikely now that both Stefano Bocchetti and Gabriel Paletta have joined the Rossoneri.

However, according to reports on Calciomercato, the player could make a move to England if a deal can be struck with the Hammers before the end of the day. Sampdoria are also interested in Munoz if a swap deal can be agreed with the Sicilians, sending defender Fabrizio Cacciatore to the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

Munoz will be out of contract at the end of the current campaign and the Rosaneri are hoping to get something for the ex-Boca Juniors man rather than lose him in the Summer for free.
